Long-time Paris grocer Charles P. Cook, 1951

Charles P. Cook, 74, who for 52 years had owned a Paris grocery store, talked with one of his customers, Mrs. James Everman, in January 1951. In a Lexington Leader feature article about the Paris merchant who had been in business the longest, Cook talked about how he competed with the chain grocery stores popping up in the Bourbon County seat. He said people are always looking for something new so he would look for products that the chains weren’t carrying. He introduced the first Kraft cheese into Paris, the first Lux soap, the first green celery, the first Chlorox, the first Wessen oil, and the first mayonnaise. Cook had been dictating many of the people of Bourbon county’s living habits for as long as they could remember. Herald-Leader Archive Photo
